I gave 16 weeks
notice of this event with numerous warnings along the way and detailed
instructions and suggestions for a smooth migration to alternate
services.
-
My current notes
suggest that there are still a few clients who have not yet transferred
their domain names to their own domain registry account; despite
having moved their websites to new hosting providers.
-
If you are one of those
people, you may be confused or uninformed.
-
If you have not
transferred your domain name to your own domain registry account, it
means that you have no control over the expiry of your domain name and
it when it comes up for renewal it will expire. I will not renew it.
That means your website and email attached to your domain name will stop
working and after expiry, the domain will be locked up for approximately
3 months and the only way you will be able to get it into your own
registry account is by paying a penalty fee as well as a renewal fee. Or
after the 3 month lockup, the domain will be released and anyone will be
able to register the domain. In other words someone else could register
that domain name.
-
The first thing you should
do is a WHOIS search of your domain name:
http://www.whois.net/
... apart from seeing the expiry date, if the registrar agent shows up
as DOMAIN PEOPLE, then there is a 99% probability that your domain name
is still in my Domain People account. The 1% probability is that you or
someone else acting on your behalf moved your domain name from my
account at Domain People to your own account at Domain People and if
that is the case, then you should log into your own Domain People
account and make sure that the ADMIN & Billing contacts are indeed
pointing to you, otherwise you will not know that your domain name is
about to expire. If you cannot login to your own account, then you need
to contact Domain People
